China has taken a new step in internet evolution with the launch of the world’s first commercial 10G broadband network. The technology has gone live in Hebei Province and the planned city of Xiong’an, considered one of the country’s key innovation hubs.
The new infrastructure uses the 50G-PON standard, capable of offering speeds close to 10 gigabits per second, more than a hundred times faster than many residential connections currently available.
Thanks to this performance, tasks that previously took minutes can now be completed in seconds. A 4K movie of approximately 20 GB, for example, can be downloaded in about 5 seconds. Furthermore, the low latency, estimated at about 3 milliseconds, favors applications such as remote surgery, autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, virtual reality, and other services that require virtually instantaneous responses.
The project was developed in collaboration between the Chinese government and Huawei and is considered one of the country’s major technological advances following the expansion of 5G networks.
According to Chinese authorities, the goal is to gradually expand the technology’s coverage throughout 2026, strengthening China’s position in the global race towards ultra-high-speed Internet and stimulating the development of new digital solutions for various sectors of the economy.
