Presented in 1976 in the historic setting of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais, the Fiat 147 represented much more than a simple small car. It symbolized Fiat’s definitive entry into the Brazilian market and introduced a series of technical solutions that, for the time, were cutting-edge.
Key innovations included the transversely mounted engine, which made better use of interior space, radial tires and a laminated glass windshield, features that significantly improved safety, comfort and efficiency, helping to set new standards in the compact car segment.
The first production car powered by ethanol
The most important chapter in the history of the Fiat 147 was written in 1979, when the model entered history as the world’s first production car powered exclusively by ethanol. Born in the midst of the Brazilian energy program Proálcool, promoted by the government after the oil crises of the 1970s, the car demonstrated that a renewable fuel could represent a valid alternative to petrol.
Affectionately nicknamed “Cachacinha”, due to the characteristic smell of combustible alcohol that reminded one of the famous Brazilian brandy, the ethanol-powered Fiat 147 paved the way for a technological revolution that would lead, a few decades later, to the development of engines flex fuel, today adopted by almost all light cars sold in Brazil.
